Year In Review

The winter months provide our management team time to reflect on the maintenance practices we utilized throughout the year.  We look at all aspects of our operation including: chemical and fertility programs, cultural practices such as aerification and topdressing, irrigation usage, products we use, new products and technologies coming to market.

We find this process to be an honest assessment; it helps identify what we do well and what areas we can improve upon.  We undergo this process every year so we can continue to improve and produce a golf course that this membership can be proud of.

2017 was a great year!  We were far from perfect, but I'm extremely proud of our consistency from day to day.  The weather last year was one of the more volatile years I can remember, but we navigated through the wet periods, dry periods, and hot stretches well.

Our primary focus remains maintaining the golf course fast and firm.  We were able to reduce our water usage by 14% last year.  We plan on building on our successes and already have a few ideas on improving that for next season.

Last summer, KCC achieved certification in Michigan Environmental Stewardship Program.  The program is intended to organize efforts of state agencies, MSU, and environmental advocacy groups, to advance the environmental stewardship of the Turfgrass industry and to recognize environmental achievement.

We were also able to complete several large scale projects including:
  • Construction of a new forward tee and landscape bed on #1
  • Sodding around the green complexes # 6, #7,#12, and #17
  • Rebuilding and filling all 54 bunkers with over 850 tons of new bunker sand

As good as 2017 was, I have a feeling the 2018 season will be even better. I hope everyone continues to have a safe and blessed New Year!
